About us
The Apparel and Textile Industry Federation was established in late 2012 the aim of providing comprehensive services to all its members to achieve the public interest.
In cooperation with the relevant authorities, the Federation seeks to support the process of industrial development in the garment and textile sector, which enhances the contribution of this sector in raising the Palestinian economic and social level.
The garment and textile sector is one of the leading sectors in Palestine, characterized by great relative importance in terms of employment, export, production, and investment.
The sector has a high potential to achieve remarkable progress and prosperity if the right opportunities and success factors are provided.
Prior to 2000, the number of affiliated industrial establishments in the Palestinian garment and textile sector amounted to about 900 establishments employing an estimated 36,000 workers across the Gaza governorates. Most of the factories worked on subcontracts with the Israeli side and very few factories operated in the West Bank.
Between 2000 and 2006, the number of factories shrank to 400-450 factories employing the equivalent of 20,000 workers, due to the JADE agreement and the Israeli market's orientation towards hi-tech, and this greatly affected the operation of factories and labor in the garment and textile industry in Gaza.
After 2007, due to the closures and the economic and political conditions imposed on the Gaza Strip, a large number of factories stopped and some of them started to work as a producer for the local market, where the number of factories became only 50-100 factories employing 2000-2500 workers.
After Israel's decision in October 2014 to open the crossings and allow sales in the garment and textile sector to the West Bank and export to Israel, the number of factories increased to 137 by the end of 2017, employing between 2,500 and 3,000 workers.
The size of employment in the garment and textile sector in 2023 was between 8,000 and 9,000 workers in about 300 factories.
