The Garment and Textile Sector Participates in the “Gaza Can” Workshop
The garment and textile sector took part in the “Gaza Can” workshop, organized by the Palestinian Housing Council and the Federation of Palestinian Industries, under the patronage of the Palestinian government represented by the Ministry of National Economy and the Ministry of Industry.
This participation comes within the framework of presenting the first prototype of a modern transitional shelter unit, designed and implemented by Palestinian hands using recycled materials, aiming to provide practical and sustainable solutions that serve displaced families and uphold the dignity of shelter.
The sector’s participation reaffirmed that the garment and textile industry in Gaza, despite the significant challenges and damages it has endured, still possesses the capacity to produce and contribute to recovery efforts by providing locally made supplies that meet shelter, health, and clothing needs.
Before the war, the sector included approximately 300 operational factories, employing around 9,000 workers. Today, only about 40 factories are operating or preparing to resume operations, employing nearly 300 workers, with a production capacity not exceeding 30% due to shortages in raw materials and energy sources. Despite these conditions, the sector continues its efforts to restart factories and provide locally produced goods that meet essential needs.
The sector emphasizes that effective intervention and support can directly contribute to increasing the number of operational factories, expanding the workforce, and enhancing production capacity, thereby supporting the path toward economic recovery.
Our message: Gaza can, and the garment and textile sector is capable of being an active partner in shelter, employment, and economic recovery.
